Julia Filippova's Tjeld Bar, inspired by Norway's coastal landscapes and the iconic oystercatcher bird, has been honored with the Silver A' Design Award 2025 for its unique blend of sustainable materials, ergonomic space planning, and immersive storytelling, redefining the bar experience in Oslo's Tjuvholmen waterfront district.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tjeld Bar, designed by Julia Filippova, has been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award for 2025, celebrating its exceptional integration of natural inspiration, sustainable materials, and innovative spatial solutions. Situated in Oslo's vibrant Tjuvholmen waterfront, the bar draws its creative vision from the Tjeld bird-Norway's beloved oystercatcher-and the surrounding coastal environment, resulting in a space that is both visually striking and deeply connected to local culture.
The interior design of Tjeld Bar is distinguished by its use of recycled and bio-based materials, including a unique natural clay plaster composed of unfired clays, minerals, river sand, and herbs. This eco-friendly approach extends to acoustic panels made from flax and hemp biocomposites, ensuring a healthy, breathable, and quiet environment for guests. The central bar station, ingeniously built around a structural column, maximizes ergonomic flow and fosters greater interaction between staff and patrons. Signature design elements-such as smooth, shell-like lines and bold accents reminiscent of the oystercatcher's beak-create a harmonious blend of function and storytelling.
Beyond its aesthetic and technical achievements, Tjeld Bar exemplifies how thoughtful design can enhance the customer experience while honoring the natural and cultural heritage of its location. The project's research-driven methodology delved into the symbolism of the Tjeld bird, the architectural character of Tjuvholmen, and the importance of sustainable practices. The result is a bar that not only serves cocktails and oysters but also offers a narrative journey, encouraging guests to appreciate the interplay between nature, design, and community. The Silver A' Design Award recognizes Tjeld Bar as a benchmark for excellence, creativity, and environmental responsibility in contemporary hospitality design.
