Kamakura Golf Clubhouse: Redefining Club Life with Work, Leisure, and Nature in Harmony

The Kamakura Golf Clubhouse, designed by Hijung Kasuya and completed between March 2021 and January 2023, has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award 2025 in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category. Located atop a hill in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture, the project reimagines the traditional golf clubhouse as a "third place"-a destination where members can seamlessly blend golf, work, and leisure amid breathtaking views of the Shonan Sea and Yokohama City.

Kasuya's vision introduces Japan's first mobile workplace within a golf clubhouse, offering members the flexibility to work remotely between rounds or unwind in a luxurious lounge, fitness room, or reading area. The design features striking architectural elements, including castle-inspired stone walls and a preserved zelkova tree stump centerpiece, symbolizing a dialogue between past and future. These focal points connect the building's exterior and interior, creating a unique narrative and design icon for the club.

Sustainability is central to the clubhouse's operation, with a sophisticated underground water distillation system supplying all facilities and ensuring resilience against water outages. The renovation encompassed earthquake-resistant upgrades and a comprehensive interior transformation across 1,320 square meters. Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, including material procurement and construction logistics, the project was completed successfully, setting a new standard for clubhouses that enrich daily life and foster community in harmony with nature.
