Reconstruction of Kouunji Kyakuden Reception Hall Blends History, Functionality, and Community Spirit

The Kouunji Kyakuden project, led by renowned architect Hiroaki Iwasa, reimagines the reception hall of the historic Kouunji Buddhist temple, a central fixture in Tsukubamirai City for over a century. Faced with the challenge of a deteriorating structure that had long been a beloved gathering place, Iwasa embarked on a comprehensive reconstruction from February 2002 to November 2004. His approach was rooted in deep research into the site's landscape, history, and community traditions, ensuring the new hall would be both a respectful homage to the past and a vibrant asset for future generations.

One of the project's defining features is the careful reuse of original materials, such as beams and columns, which were salvaged and restored despite the building's severe tilt from soft ground. Iwasa's design harmonizes the new structure with the temple's existing architecture and the surrounding landscape, incorporating local cedar wood, a regionally distinctive roofline, and the revival of the traditional natural paint "Kumezo." The result is a building that not only evokes a sense of nostalgia but also stands as a symbol of resilience and continuity for the local community.

Functionally, the new reception hall is designed to support a wide range of activities, from religious ceremonies and community gatherings to serving as a temporary evacuation center in emergencies. The clear, accessible floor plan connects each functional area around a central entrance, while modern amenities and thoughtful craftsmanship ensure durability and comfort. By choosing a common wooden house construction method over traditional temple techniques, the project reduced costs and construction time, allowing for the preservation of historic elements and the integration of contemporary needs. This sensitive balance of old and new has earned Kouunji Kyakuden the Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture, Building, and Structure Design for 2025.
