CHIA-CHI YEH's "Unpolished Light" Apartment Renovation Wins Bronze at 2025 A' Design Award for Innovative Family Living

TAIWAN (CHINA) -- /ARCHITECTURE/newswire -- Sep 09, 2024

"Unpolished Light," designed by CHIA-CHI YEH and completed in October 2022 in Taiwan, has been honored with a Bronze A' Design Award for its thoughtful transformation of a 109-square-meter apartment into an open, light-filled residence that prioritizes family interaction, comfort, and efficient use of space.

Award-Winning "Unpolished Light" Residence Redefines Family Living with Openness, Warmth, and Smart Design Solutions

CHIA-CHI YEH's "Unpolished Light" project reimagines apartment living for a family of four, focusing on the creation of a spacious, interconnected social area that fosters togetherness. By removing partitions, shortening the entryway, and recessing the master bedroom, the design team maximized the living and dining spaces, allowing natural light to flow freely and creating a seamless visual connection throughout the home. The project's main goal was to provide a warm, modern environment where the family could comfortably spend time together, while still offering private corners for each member.

To address the challenge of limited space and storage, the designer implemented clever solutions such as dual-sided entryway cabinets and a 45-degree angled corridor that balances the daughters' room sizes and enhances circulation. The use of eco-friendly materials-including emulsion paint, engineered hardwood, marble, and large-format tiles-ensures both functionality and aesthetics. Each area's material selection was tailored for its specific use: marble adds understated luxury to the TV wall, while Italian kitchen tiles provide durability and safety.

One of the project's most notable achievements is overcoming the apartment's low ceiling height, which posed difficulties for installing a concealed air conditioning system. The designer resolved this by integrating a long air outlet within the ceiling, maintaining both comfort and visual openness. In the daughters' rooms, sloped ceilings were introduced to counteract height limitations and add a playful touch. The result is a harmonious blend of deep and light tones, creating a serene, inviting atmosphere that embodies the essence of home and reflects the family's lifestyle.
