Chien-Hwan Wang's "Tranquil Mist," a 92.5-square-meter residence in Taiwan designed for a retired couple, has been honored with the Iron A' Design Award 2025 for its seamless blend of comfort, accessibility, and nature-inspired aesthetics, redefining retirement living through thoughtful spatial planning and elegant, curved forms.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Completed in March 2024 in Taiwan, "Tranquil Mist" by Chien-Hwan Wang reimagines retirement living with a focus on tranquility, accessibility, and aesthetic sophistication. Designed for a retired couple, the project transforms a four-room apartment into a fluid, open-plan sanctuary that supports both shared and independent lifestyles. The design draws inspiration from nature, incorporating gentle curves and organic forms reminiscent of clouds and mountain mists to foster a calming, harmonious environment.
Distinctive features include custom plaster lamps that echo stalactites, seamlessly integrated curved walls and ceilings, and a pastel color palette of low-saturation blues, grays, and whites. These elements work together to maximize natural light, minimize harsh boundaries, and create a sense of visual continuity with the lush greenery outside. The innovative double master bedroom layout, with looped circulation and flexible privacy options, allows the couple to enjoy both togetherness and solitude as desired-a solution inspired by Japanese senior housing and tailored to the evolving needs of retirees.
The project overcame significant challenges, including reconfiguring the fixed positions of the kitchen and bathroom and optimizing the limited 92.5-square-meter space for both functionality and beauty. Materials such as Mamo stone, rattan, glass tiles, and eco-friendly paints were carefully selected for their tactile warmth and environmental sensitivity. Residents report high satisfaction with the adaptive circulation, serene color scheme, and the overall sense of peace and connection to nature, making "Tranquil Mist" a model for future retirement residences. The Iron A' Design Award recognizes the project's excellence in integrating best practices, technical innovation, and emotional fulfillment in interior design.
