Yi-Ning Lo's "Morning Field" project has transformed a traditional B&B in Yilan, Taiwan, into a serene retreat that embodies the principles of wabi-sabi minimalism. Completed in October 2023, the redesign was driven by a deep understanding of the owner's desire for a relaxing vacation space and a careful analysis of the site's potential. By retaining the original architectural concrete and integrating modern design elements, Lo has created a space where simplicity, warmth, and functionality coexist harmoniously.
The renovation focused on maximizing space utilization across the B&B's three floors, totaling 247.9 square meters. The first floor now serves as a welcoming shared area with an expanded lounge and dining space, while the second floor features a unique semi-outdoor bathtub area that enhances the guest experience and redefines relaxation. The third floor offers two double rooms, ensuring both privacy and comfort for visitors. Thoughtful material choices-including Italian dark paint, stone plastic composite flooring, vintage tiles, and natural fabrics-were selected for their durability, moisture resistance, and tactile appeal, making the space both beautiful and practical for Yilan's humid climate.
The project's success lies in its ability to merge the raw essence of concrete with a refined, modern aesthetic. Simple lines, a warm color palette, and the strategic use of light create an inviting atmosphere reminiscent of a sunlit morning field. The use of rattan lighting and cotton-linen textiles adds rustic charm, while clever spatial reconfiguration-such as relocating the bathtub-exceeds the owner's expectations and elevates the B&B's appeal to guests. The design not only addresses technical challenges posed by the local environment but also tells a story of harmony between people and nature, offering guests a peaceful escape from the everyday.
"Morning Field" has been recognized with the Bronze A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2025, celebrating its creative ingenuity, technical excellence, and contribution to enhancing quality of life through thoughtful design. The project stands as a testament to Yi-Ning Lo's commitment to integrating best practices in art, science, and design, making a meaningful impact on both the occupants and the broader community.
