Retro Palais: Award-Winning Historical Residence Blending Italian Charm and Contemporary Design in Istanbul

Retro Palais, designed by Yasmin Aryas, stands as a testament to the seamless integration of heritage and innovation in the heart of Istanbul's historic Tomtom neighborhood. Once an Italian hotel, the 250-square-meter residence has been thoughtfully transformed into a modern home while preserving its rich architectural legacy. The project, initiated in 2020 and completed in 2024, draws inspiration from the building's central courtyard and its majestic magnolia tree, which serves as both a visual anchor and a source of tranquility.

The design process focused on maintaining the building's historical essence while introducing contemporary elements such as clean lines, open spaces, and innovative features. Natural materials like walnut, oak, marble, and iron are complemented by a retro-inspired palette of green, burgundy, and cream, creating a sophisticated yet inviting atmosphere. Glass partitions maximize natural light, and the careful placement of the homeowners' art collection further personalizes the space. High ceilings ranging from 3 to 3.5 meters enhance the sense of openness and depth, while the courtyard and garden provide a serene retreat reminiscent of Italy.

Retro Palais overcame significant challenges, including lengthy permit processes and pandemic-related delays, to achieve its vision of blending old-world charm with modern living. The project's qualitative research approach ensured that the renovation honored the building's spatial identity while meeting contemporary needs. This dedication to both form and function has earned Retro Palais the prestigious Silver A' Design Award 2025 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category, recognizing its outstanding creativity, technical excellence, and emotional resonance.
