Artscape: Blending American Classical Grandeur with Contemporary Family Living in Taoyuan

Artscape, designed by Li Huei Wang of JT Design, stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of classical sophistication and modern practicality. Completed in February 2020 in Taoyuan, Taiwan, this 336-square-meter residence was crafted to reflect the homeowner's appreciation for classical aesthetics while accommodating the diverse needs of a six-person family. The project's open layout centers around a "family core area," fostering togetherness and daily interaction, which is essential to the household's lifestyle.

Upon entry, guests are greeted by a striking marble inlay foyer, flanked by decorative mirrored wall panels and intricate moldings that set an elegant tone for the home. The public areas feature sea island wood flooring, Roman columns, a classic fireplace, and hand-painted wallcoverings, all carefully selected to evoke the grandeur of American classical interiors. These elements are thoughtfully balanced with contemporary touches and Eastern influences, such as round stools and wall fabrics, creating a rich, layered spatial experience.

The design process addressed several architectural challenges, including a low ceiling beam in the public area. To counteract any sense of confinement, classical wire plates were used to conceal the beam, while mirrors above the foyer enhanced the perception of height and light. Additional mirrors in the dining area compensate for limited natural light, amplifying brightness and spatial depth. Bedrooms are strategically placed at opposite ends of the narrow floor plan, with the central living space serving as a vibrant hub for family connection. Artscape's innovative approach and attention to both form and function have earned it the Bronze A' Design Award, recognizing its contribution to quality of life and design excellence.
