Kodai Fukuchi's "Paper and Wood" exhibition booth, created for Crecia and showcased at Tokyo Big Sight in August 2023, has been honored with the Bronze A' Design Award 2025 for its pioneering use of only recyclable paper and wood materials, setting a new benchmark for sustainability and zero-waste practices in trade show architecture.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The "Paper and Wood" exhibition booth, designed by Kodai Fukuchi and his team for Crecia, reimagines trade show architecture with a focus on environmental responsibility. Presented at Tokyo Big Sight in August 2023, the booth was constructed solely from recyclable paper and wood, eliminating waste by ensuring all materials would be reused or recycled after the event. This approach not only highlighted Crecia's commitment to sustainability but also offered a tangible demonstration of how everyday materials can be leveraged to minimize environmental impact.
The booth's design was inspired by Crecia's dedication to using sustainable wood resources in their paper products. To visually communicate this ethos, the structure incorporated approximately 75 meters of paper in its upper construction, symbolizing Crecia's extra-long toilet paper rolls. Three distinct types of plywood were randomly combined to showcase the natural beauty and diversity of wood, while the use of thinned Hokkaido fir for structural elements promoted regional forestry. The entire booth was engineered for easy disassembly, using screws and puzzle-like flooring that required no tools, further supporting the zero-waste philosophy.
Visitors to the booth engaged in interactive activities such as a stamp rally using surplus tissue box materials, reinforcing the message of paper recyclability. Surveys conducted onsite helped raise awareness about proper disposal and recycling of paper products. The project's innovative approach to sustainable exhibition design has drawn attention within the industry, inspiring other exhibitors to adopt similar practices and demonstrating the economic and environmental benefits of reducing waste. Overcoming challenges such as replacing traditional metal scaffolding with wooden pipes, the team delivered a booth that not only stood out for its aesthetics and message but also contributed to advancing sustainable practices in exhibition design.
