Atsushi Murakami's Chuji, a modern Chinese teahouse in Tokyo, has been honored with the Bronze A' Design Award 2025 for its innovative use of recycled tea leaves, cost-effective materials, and a sensory-rich, sustainable space that redefines retail interiors in the city's vibrant landscape.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Chuji, designed by Atsushi Murakami and located in the heart of Tokyo, has been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award 2025 in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category. The project distinguishes itself through a unique blend of sustainability, sensory engagement, and creative cost management, setting a new standard for retail experiences in one of the world's most dynamic cities.
Inspired by Tokyo's multinational character, Chuji offers a gentle, modern alternative to the city's many ornate Chinese restaurants. The 66-square-meter teahouse features a serene, Zen-like atmosphere, achieved by using readily available materials and inventive construction techniques. Notably, the design incorporates dried, crushed used tea leaves-sourced from a partner store that discards 600 kg annually-into the plaster walls. This not only infuses the space with a subtle fragrance and distinctive texture, but also raises awareness about sustainability and creative reuse in interior design.
The teahouse's seating area eschews straight lines in favor of a large, curved communal table that appears to float, thanks to a single leg and a ceiling suspension. This innovative solution addresses both spatial efficiency and visual lightness, creating a mysterious and inviting environment. Customers can browse and purchase products from display cases or reserve a seat for a curated course featuring premium Chinese teas and sweets, making Chuji a multisensory destination for both locals and visitors.
Completed in April 2024, Chuji stands out not only for its aesthetic and functional achievements, but also for its commitment to sustainability and originality. The project exemplifies how thoughtful design can elevate everyday spaces, improve quality of life, and contribute to a more resourceful and environmentally conscious urban culture.
