Porch: A Modern Take on Traditional Iranian Architecture Through Multifunctional Interior Design

"Porch" is a groundbreaking interior design project by Salva Abed Kahnamouei, recently awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category for 2025. The project, located in Tehran and completed in August 2023, transforms an old family house into a versatile, multifunctional environment. Drawing inspiration from the timeless beauty and structural ingenuity of Iranian arches, Kahnamouei's design seamlessly fuses traditional elements with a contemporary aesthetic, creating a space that honors both heritage and innovation.

The project stands out for its deliberate removal of unnecessary architectural elements and decorations, resulting in a clean, open layout that prioritizes both function and flexibility. Custom-designed furniture and wooden segments, produced exclusively for this project, maximize the use of sustainable materials, particularly wood, to minimize environmental impact. Integrated smart home systems allow users to control lighting, curtains, and air conditioning, ensuring that each area's ambiance can be tailored to individual needs. The color palette of gray and dark blue, combined with preserved wooden floors and modern mirrors, creates a harmonious blend of old and new, while the distinctive arches serve as a visual and structural focal point.

One of the main challenges addressed by the design was achieving true multifunctionality within the constraints of a limited, older structure. Every element-from the TV cabinet and sideboard to the fitness cabinet and cloakroom-was custom built to optimize space and usability. The project's success lies in its ability to provide a wide range of applications in a single, cohesive environment, offering residents both comfort and versatility. By respecting nature and time through sustainable choices and thoughtful integration of traditional forms, "Porch" sets a new standard for modern Iranian interior design.
