Marcello Rodriguez Pons reveals the Punta Piedra masterplan, a sustainable, mixed-use waterfront microcity in Carmelo, Uruguay, designed to foster vibrant public life and ecological responsibility, with construction on its first phase slated to begin in late 2025 following international acclaim and a Silver A' Design Award.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Punta Piedra, conceived by Marcello Rodriguez Pons, is a groundbreaking riverfront masterplan in Carmelo, Uruguay, that reimagines urban living through a human-scale, mixed-use microcity. Spanning 91 hectares along the Rio de la Plata, the project is anchored by an elliptical boulevard, the Gran Via, which seamlessly connects residential, commercial, cultural, and recreational spaces from the inland eucalyptus forests to the river's edge. Designed around the "15-minute city" concept, Punta Piedra ensures that all essential amenities-homes, workplaces, schools, parks, and shops-are accessible within a short walk or bike ride, fostering a close-knit, active community.
Distinctive for its public-spirited approach, Punta Piedra's waterfront is intentionally designed with multiple public access points, inviting residents and visitors to engage with the coastline through swimming, fishing, dining, boating, and community events. Unlike traditional waterfront developments dominated by private residences, Punta Piedra prioritizes vibrant, accessible spaces that host festivals, markets, and cultural gatherings, ensuring round-the-clock activity and inclusivity. Two iconic high-rise towers will define the city's skyline, while the marina is set to accommodate up to 1,600 boats, further enhancing the area's recreational appeal.
Sustainability is at the heart of Punta Piedra's vision. The development will utilize construction and demolition waste from Montevideo for foundational works and new building materials, with a goal of incorporating 50% recycled content in all new structures. The masterplan respects local topography, water dynamics, and native vegetation, integrating ecological preservation with urban functionality. Phase one, including marina infrastructure and promenade construction, is scheduled to commence in late 2025. Recognized for its innovative design and technical excellence, Punta Piedra has been exhibited internationally and recently received the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in City Planning and Urban Design for 2025.
