Hardik Shah's Skewed House, a striking 11,000-square-foot villa in Surat, India, has been honored with the Bronze A' Design Award 2019 for its unique blend of minimal aesthetics, nature integration, and inventive spatial planning that redefines urban residential living.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Skewed House, designed by architect Hardik Shah and his team at Studio Lagom, stands as a testament to innovative residential architecture in Surat, India. Completed in August 2017 after six years of meticulous planning and construction, the villa was conceived as an oasis of tranquility amidst the city's bustling urban landscape. Drawing inspiration from Shah's passion for photography, the house is characterized by a series of interconnected vistas and subtle shifts in geometry, creating dynamic perspectives and a sense of movement throughout the space.
The villa's design departs from conventional residential planning, embracing simple aesthetics, a minimal material palette, and a strong connection to nature. The use of black granite flooring, exposed concrete, white plaster, and warm teak wood-both Valsadi and Burma-creates a harmonious interplay of textures and tones. A distinctive feature is the slatted compound wall crafted from Valsadi teak, softened by cascading creepers, which introduces a natural element right at the entrance. The spatial program was thoughtfully developed to address the region's susceptibility to sudden floods, with the garden ingeniously elevated to the first floor and seamlessly connected to the entire house via a post-tensioned slab.
Inside, the villa is bathed in natural light and offers uninterrupted views of lush greenery, blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. The façade's strategic projections and recesses, achieved through cantilevering and material play, emphasize key areas while enhancing the building's sculptural quality. The collaborative efforts of Sweta Gajiwala Doriwala and Kruti Sheta-Patel in interior styling further elevate the residence's contemporary yet serene ambiance. The Skewed House's recognition at the A' Design Award underscores its contribution to quality of life, setting a new benchmark for luxury villas that prioritize both form and function.
