Fei Hu’s Longhu Hotel Design Wins A’ Design Award, Advancing the Global Influence of Zen-Inspired Oriental Aesthetics

Fei Hu’s Longhu Hotel Design won the 2024 A’ Design Award in the Interior Space and Exhibition Design category. Although the work received the honor last year, it continues to be regarded as a significant representation of the “Zen Oriental” design style and remains highly recognized within the international design community.The Longhu Hotel Design draws upon the cultural symbolism of the dragon and phoenix, translating traditional Eastern imagery into a contemporary spatial language. The hotel lobby uses curved beige marble surfaces, copper façades, and soft lighting to create a serene and composed atmosphere. A crystal chandelier abstractly reinterprets the form of phoenix feathers, balancing movement and stillness throughout the space. The project not only demonstrates Hu’s mastery of proportions, materials, and light but also reflects his long-term commitment to cultural research and design innovation.With more than twenty years of professional experience, Fei Hu has developed a distinctive “Zen Oriental” interior design philosophy through extensive study of Zen Buddhism, classical Chinese landscape painting of the Tang and Song dynasties, and traditional Zen gardens. His approach merges traditional Chinese aesthetics with contemporary minimalism, creating spaces that are visually refined, emotionally calming, and culturally profound.The style emphasizes “less is more,” removing unnecessary decoration while focusing on the essential qualities of space. It values harmony among nature, materials, light, and emotional atmosphere.Unlike the Japanese Wabi-sabi aesthetic—also rooted in Zen culture but centered on imperfection, austerity, and a sense of solitude—the “Zen Oriental” approach embraces a more uplifting and inclusive philosophy. Similar to the idyllic imagery depicted in classical Chinese landscape paintings, it embodies harmony, tranquility, and an optimistic attitude toward daily life, making it especially relevant in today’s fast-paced and high-pressure environment.On the global stage, Fei Hu has not only received the 2024 A’ Design Award but has also earned multiple international honors, including the DNA Paris Design Awards (France), MUSE Design Awards (USA), and the NY Architectural Design Awards. His works have been consistently recognized by juries worldwide. Many of his projects have been featured in interior design magazines and books and covered by national-level media, establishing him as a notable representative of China’s new generation of design talent.Fei Hu began his career in Shanghai and founded his own design firm in 2004. Over the following two decades, he has continually explored contemporary expressions of Chinese aesthetics across high-end residences, hotels, public cultural venues, and commercial projects. His designs maintain a balance between cultural heritage and global vision, consistently pushing boundaries through material innovation, spatial narrative, and aesthetic refinement.Today, Hu serves as the Chief Designer at a residential development company in the United States, where he integrates Zen Oriental aesthetics with North American residential design principles. He is committed to promoting energy-efficient design, sustainable materials, and green building practices. His work actively responds to climate change challenges and contributes to creating residential environments that are environmentally responsible, culturally meaningful, and physically comfortable.As one of the key innovators advancing the Zen Oriental design movement, Fei Hu has established a new interior design language characterized by philosophical depth, aesthetic clarity, and modern functionality.
