Boxes and Yards: A School for the 21st Century

Inclusive Architectural Practice introduces "Boxes and Yards," a groundbreaking learner-centered primary school located in Beijing, China. Completed in 2019, this project redefines traditional educational spaces, embracing the concept of Learning Anywhere Anytime and Passive House Standards. The school's innovative design fosters openness, interactivity, and adaptability, creating a dynamic environment for students and educators.

The school's unique layout, featuring a Grade Lounge and triangular courtyards, promotes a sense of community and connectivity. The design team's vision for a multi-dimensional, multi-center system of learning communities has transformed a century-old institution into a cutting-edge educational facility.

Despite budget constraints, the design incorporates dynamic elements such as rotated massing, spinning color blocks, and polygonal spaces, enhancing the school's functionality and aesthetic appeal. The interior spaces, named "Hub of Intelligence," serve as versatile learning centers, enabling various activities and project-based learning.

Embracing philosophies such as multiple intelligences and education as growth, the design seamlessly integrates educational principles into its architectural framework. The school's educators have collaborated with the design team to ensure that the space reflects modern pedagogical practices, creating an environment that supports diverse learning styles and experiences.

Recognized with the prestigious A' Design Award in 2021, "Boxes and Yards" stands as a testament to Inclusive Architectural Practice's commitment to redefining educational spaces. Founder Xiaoyi Ma's dedication to learner-centered design has positioned IAP as a pioneer in creating adaptable and versatile learning environments for both international and public schools.
