Renowned designer Ning ZHANG has unveiled the groundbreaking "City Archipelago," a revolutionary project that redefines urban brownfield transition through the introduction of biophilic creative blocks. The project, located in Zhenru Subcenter, Putuo District, Shanghai, commenced in March 2021 and was completed in August 2021, with construction currently in full swing. The innovative design integrates water and green elements as key components of urban islands, serving as green infrastructure to manage storm floods and enhance citizen experience. The project's unique approach breathes new life into the region, offering lasting appeal for locals and entrepreneurs.

The 15-hectare project features business service facilities strategically positioned to provide an organic defense against noise and visual distractions, optimizing the biophilic experience. Notably, the design incorporates a blend of office, residential, and digital innovation functions to maintain the streets' vigor, creating a balanced and economically sustainable environment. The project's transit-oriented development in the east harmonizes with large open spaces in the west, enabling seamless progress.

Shanghai's Zhenru Subcenter has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving from a railyard into a future-oriented biophilic creation center. The project has successfully removed polluted soil, established rainwater-regulating rivers, and seamlessly integrated islands with green buildings, creating an alluring eco-space that appeals to digital enterprises and makers, revitalizing the region. Dr. Ning ZHANG's visionary design has not only captivated nearby residents but has also garnered international recognition, earning the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in City Planning and Urban Design in 2023.
