Nobuhito Mori's "Double Skin" is a modern light filter inspired by traditional Japanese architecture, designed to soften light and provide privacy in densely built urban areas.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Nobuhito Mori's "Double Skin" is a three-story wooden structure located in Kikuicho, Tokyo, Japan. Completed in 2011, this innovative design addresses the challenge of ensuring light and privacy in a small, densely built-up area with a distance of only about 1m from neighboring land.
The design draws inspiration from the traditional Japanese shoji, utilizing a translucent cladding made of weatherproof and semi-transparent polycarbonate. This material softens incoming light, blurs visibility, and can be used outside, providing a unique solution for urban living.
Featuring a folded plate and flat sheet construction, the translucent cladding enhances strength and resilience to weather conditions. At night, the lighted facade becomes a large light source, illuminating the streets and adding to the building's visual appeal.
With a site area of 35m2, a building area of 19m2, and a total floor area of 55m2, "Double Skin" stands as a testament to innovative architectural design within spatial constraints. The project was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2022, recognizing its outstanding expertise and innovation in the field of architecture, building, and structure design.
