Designing a Surprise Journey to the Oriental Garden

Minus Workshop's latest project, Dabpa-Shatin, brings a unique dining experience to the heart of New Town Plaza. The restaurant's design draws inspiration from the beautiful scenic area of Chengdu, creating a surprise journey to an oriental garden within the mall. The design concept aims to seamlessly blend the outdoor and indoor spaces, offering a sense of understated timelessness.

The restaurant's unique cell-shaped layout, strategically positioned near a communal passage with abundant natural light and garden decor, provides a serene dining environment. Each banquette seater is thoughtfully placed next to large windows with unique potted landscapes, offering customers a private and immersive dining experience.

With a focus on interconnectivity, the design blurs the lines between the indoor and outdoor, inviting passersby to discover the unexpected within the tranquil ambiance of the restaurant. The project presented various challenges, including the need to create an all-age-oriented space for Sichuan cuisine, while prioritizing privacy and accommodating occasional private events.

Featuring a 360-degree traffic circulation, the space is optimized for efficient staff movement, ensuring seamless service for the signature hot dishes served in large pots. The project, which commenced in June 2020 and concluded in December 2020, has been recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award for Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design in 2021.
