Yu’s Residence: A Luxurious Blend of Classical and Contemporary Design

UJ DESIGN STUDIO presents Yu’s Residence, a 135m² residential space in Taipei, completed in December 2019. The project was inspired by the diverse personalities of the Yu family members, aiming to strike a balance while incorporating their overseas living experiences and a mix of cultures.

The design team's core focus was to use contemporary techniques to create a classical space, subtly infusing luxury culture into the living space. Thin titanium-coated stainless steel strips were strategically placed to create a gentle, glittering effect in the shadow, reflecting various effects with changing sunlight.

The design also incorporates oriental culture, utilizing fengshui principles to extend the sight from the entrance to the living room, allowing sunlight to stream inside. The use of mirrors to enlarge visual space sense and the ceiling's form subtly imply the limit of each space.

Through continuous discussions with the clients, the design team successfully integrated their various thoughts with modern spatial manipulation, resulting in a harmonious blend of classical and modern design elements.

Inspired by the concept of mixed culture and the combination of classical with modern style, the Moooi Smoke Chair was strategically placed in the entrance to symbolize the project's main concept. Additionally, the design team drew inspiration from Carlo Scarpa's "spirit in the corner" to resolve the junction of titanium-coated stainless steel, employing leveling techniques to solve the trim problem.

The project was awarded Bronze in A' Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design Award in 2020, recognizing its outstanding and creatively ingenious design that authentically embodies experience and resourcefulness.
