Lihan Jin's innovative design addresses water scarcity in Cairo through a unique solar distiller system
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Lihan Jin's "Islamic Distiller" project offers a sustainable solution to the pervasive water scarcity issue in Cairo, inspired by the designer's volunteer experience in the city. The design features an umbrella-shaped structure that utilizes solar energy to distill rainwater into potable water, addressing the water supply and sanitation challenges faced by small mosques in the area.
The umbrella-shaped structure of the distillation system, echoing local religious patterns, is designed to be easily replicated throughout Cairo and the wider Islamic region. By leveraging the high foot traffic of mosques, the system aims to provide a reliable source of clean water for local residents, taking into account their daily habits and needs.
Realized through innovative technology, the system's thin membrane surface facilitates the evaporation and condensation of rainwater, which is then collected and transported to water tanks or taps. This sustainable approach to water harvesting and distribution aligns with contemporary architectural principles and promotes green building practices, contributing to the overall well-being of the community.
