Renowned architect Masakatsu Matsuyama unveils a groundbreaking residence inspired by traditional island culture and designed to withstand severe subtropical climate
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Renowned architect Masakatsu Matsuyama has unveiled a groundbreaking residential project, the "House for Parents," located on Amami-Oshima Island. Inspired by the traditional daily custom of gathering under the shade of large trees, the design celebrates the culture of the region and aims to re-emerge the spirit of traditional life on the island.
The house is uniquely designed to withstand the severe subtropical climate and frequent typhoons of the region. A large roof, supported by a 4-meter-span steel framework structure, creates a cool and shady environment, reminiscent of the comfort of a space under trees. The concrete walls are designed to stand independently, allowing for a free-flowing floor plan that extends outward with projecting walls, seamlessly blending the interior with the rich external landscape of the island.
Masakatsu Matsuyama, known for his design-led architectural practice Matsuyama Architect and Associates, has a history of producing finely crafted architecture that harmonizes with contemporary society while praising the profound tradition of Japanese culture. The "House for Parents" is a testament to his ability to create distinctive, functional, and aesthetically remarkable designs that push the boundaries of architectural innovation.
