Ling Zhou's innovative teahouse design in Chongqing breaks traditional Chinese style boundaries, offering a modern, elegant, and cultural space for tea enthusiasts. Completed in October 2019, the project redefines the symbiosis of culture and architecture, presenting a unique aesthetic viewpoint.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ling Zhou's "Reading Tea" project is a groundbreaking reinterpretation of traditional Chinese teahouse design. The 380-square-meter space in Chongqing, completed in October 2019, challenges conventional design norms by seamlessly blending traditional Chinese elements with a modern, elegant aesthetic.
By utilizing a spatial design approach, Zhou has transformed the teahouse into a captivating space that retains traditional Chinese materials while offering a fresh design direction. The project's highlight is the innovative use of resized wood to create a new spatial framework, breaking away from the typical Chinese tea space design.
Zhou's design stands out for its unique approach to connecting the space through the relationship between wood and stainless steel walls with the same tonality. This creates a multi-level, overlapping space that showcases pure design details, offering a departure from the traditional Chinese style dominating most teahouses.
The teahouse's circular space form, crafted from wood chips, maintains the characteristics of woodiness while introducing a new spatial form. The project also features natural stone elements, polished to form an uneven surface that harmoniously complements the wood textures.
In addition to its aesthetic appeal, the teahouse's design prioritizes practicality and durability, ensuring a comfortable and enduring space for users. The project's duration spanned from June to October 2019, with the location and completion both in Chongqing.
Recognized for its exceptional design, "Reading Tea" received the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This accolade celebrates the project's remarkable contribution to advancing art, science, design, and technology, reflecting Zhou's prodigious talent and innovative approach.
