Compound Bookstore "Cross" - A Champion Among "My Favorite Bookstores of 2022"

In the heart of Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province, China, the "Cross" bookstore stands as a testament to the fusion of Chinese and Western cultures. Designed by Xixi Quan, Junming Chen, and Kau Chan, this multifunctional bookstore serves as a vibrant space for comfortable reading and salon activities in the public sphere. The unique "Moon Gate and Arch" space partition installation, a visual representation of transition and wisdom, has garnered widespread acclaim, earning the title of the champion among 13 "My Favorite Bookstores of 2022".

Spanning approximately 780 square meters, the "Cross" bookstore features 48 moon gates and arches, each parametrically generated to match the spatial functions, spans, and areas. The utilization of parametric plugin Grasshopper and prefabricated perforated aluminum panels allowed for the creation of a visually stunning and accessible space within a low construction budget. The installation's rainbow-like gradient colors not only define different functional spaces but also enhance the reader's spatial memory, making navigation effortless and enjoyable.

The project, which commenced in March 2021 and concluded in July 2021, officially opened its doors to the public in August 2021. The "Cross" bookstore has received the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2023, recognizing its outstanding expertise, innovation, and remarkable level of excellence in interior space, retail, and exhibition design.
