FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Preserving the Karst Landscape

The Guiyang New Community Park, designed by Hu Sun, stands as a testament to a resilient design that successfully integrates a program of leisure activities for the public with the preservation of karst landscape formations. Located adjacent to the Laoma River, the park is situated within undulating karst hills, providing a picturesque setting that emphasizes the existing landscape character. The project was completed in June 2020, after being designed in December 2019.

The park's unique features include a minimum intervention approach that respects the site and highlights the local karst geography and former land use. The design integrates a waterfront area to support dynamic hydrological processes, promoting the connection between human beings and nature. The interventions on site were kept to a minimum, with the existing habitat widely preserved, and traditional construction methods were reintroduced to address soil stability and site reconstruction.

With a landscape design area of 130,000 square meters, the project also reintroduced farming terraces and low dry walls built with local limestone rocks to protect and reinforce the land adjacent to the flood zone. The park's design promotes resilience and sustainability, utilizing local materials and traditional construction techniques to reduce maintenance costs.
