Ming Cao's Aka Honn: Japanese Charcoal Grill Store

Ming Cao's Aka Honn project is a testament to the fusion of traditional Japanese design principles with modern functionality. Inspired by the Azuma House designed by Tadao Ando, the store features a central patio that integrates natural elements, creating an introverted compression aesthetic. The narrow entrance and poor lighting are transformed into a serene, natural space with a distinct Japanese zen temperament, offering a stark contrast to the city's hustle and bustle.

The 400-square-meter interior space accommodates 120 seats and a bar area for 15 people. The design incorporates spatial segmentation, functional layout, and the use of natural materials, including stone and wood, to evoke a comfortable and authentic Japanese dining experience.

Challenges in creating a quiet and natural atmosphere in a downtown location were overcome by closing the original windows, reconstructing the space structure around the atrium patio, and embracing Japanese design elements. The result is a unique zen space atmosphere that offers a sense of privacy and tranquility.
