Szu-Hsin Cheng Transforms 40-Year-Old Building into a Sustainable Studio Space
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Szu-Hsin Cheng's project "The Next 40 Years" is a sustainable office renovation located in Taichung, Taiwan. The project, which began in 2017, aimed to transform a 40-plus-year-old building into a studio space for architectural practice. The design team leveraged the building's corner position and integrated natural elements to create a more environmentally friendly and inviting urban space.
The renovation prioritized the preservation of existing site vegetation and material efficiency, minimizing waste and reflecting sustainable initiatives. Recycled materials were used for outdoor pavement and stair platforms, while the second-floor conference room preserved the original building frame and incorporated onsite Taiwan incense cedar as part of the office decor.
The project faced the challenge of balancing the old and the new within the existing spatial structure, ultimately achieving the integration of the old and the new to create a charming architectural appearance and comfortable internal space. The result is a space that reinterprets the past life and reconstructs the old communities in the city, all while minimizing ecological impact.
Szu-Hsin Cheng's "The Next 40 Years" project was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2020 for its outstanding and creatively ingenious sustainable design. The project showcases strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
