McCauley Daye O'Connell Architects Presents Elizabeth's Tree House

McCauley Daye O'Connell Architects has unveiled "Elizabeth's Tree House," a new dining pavilion designed as a magical space for a therapeutic camp in Co. Kildare, Ireland. Nestled in an overgrown woodland, the dining hall is envisioned as a treehouse in the forest, creating a dialogue with nature and serving as an enchanted portal surrounded by the lake, countryside, and forest life.

Flanked by a secret garden wall and castle landscaping, the radiating diagrid pattern weaves a new building that blurs the lines of indoor/outdoor space with irregular shapes and floating terraces. The building, achieving an A3 energy rating, features a heavily insulated, sustainable timber structure protected using an environmentally-friendly, water-based system.

A bright and airy dining space, supported by primary steel/timber “tree” columns, welcomes children with large areas of glass in the walls and roof, maximizing natural light and offering views of the rolling landscape. The internal space is connected to an external deck, allowing for universal access onto an external space overlooking the existing pond.

The pavilion, echoing the therapeutic nature of the camp, promotes user comfort, relaxation, healing, and enchantment, serving as a demonstration of the role of architecture in the healing process. The project, started in January 2016 and completed in December 2016, is a testament to the positive impact of well-designed buildings on the human healing process.
