Manuel Lap Yan Lam's Design Transforms University of Macau's Hengqin Campus
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Renowned designer Manuel Lap Yan Lam has unveiled his latest project, Bowl Fantasy, a modern Cantonese âtong suiâ store located at the University of Macau's Hengqin campus. The store offers a unique dining experience, where the traditional Chinese dessert is served in a space reimagined through innovative design techniques.
Entering the âtong suiâ store is akin to stepping into a magical palace, where fragments of bowls are creatively scattered, folded, stacked, and rearranged into various forms and shapes. From three-dimensional screens to dynamic ceiling designs and giant chandeliers, the space sparks imagination and offers unlimited possibilities for diners.
Leveraging off-site laser cutting technology, 80% of the design was realized off-site to reduce costs, construction time, and onsite labor. This collaboration with laser cutting manufacturers has resulted in the creation of different forms and folding techniques, becoming the highlight of the spatial design.
Manuel Lap Yan Lam, the creative director, and his design team, including Scarlett Li, overcame the challenges of a low budget and time constraints by integrating the fabrication process, on-site installation, and transportation limitations into their design operations.
Manuel Lap Yan Lam is the founder and chief architect of the Volks Design & Research Consulting Ltd., an interdisciplinary design practice based in Macau and China. With a master's degree from Harvard University GSD and experiences at top architecture and design firms, Manuel Lam has been recognized as a leading figure in the industry, curating exhibitions and receiving numerous awards for his outstanding work.
