George Sinas' Xerolithi: A Unique Blend of Nature and Architecture
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Architect George Sinas has redefined Greek island living with the creation of Xerolithi, a unique summer house situated in Kalo Ampeli, Serifos Island, Cyclades, Greece. The design of Xerolithi was inspired by the natural environment, featuring stone walls that mimic the local xerolithies, creating a seamless blend with the surrounding landscape. The house challenges traditional morphological preconceptions, with its stacked facade gradually developing in height, resembling the xerolithies found in the area.
The main facades of the house move independently from one another, forming living spaces in between, while a traditional bamboo pergola with wooden raw beams follows the curvy morphology, creating a unique and organic architectural expression. The outer shell of the structure is predominantly stone, with 50cm thick exterior walls and a concrete structural system.
Designed in 2015, the construction of Xerolithi began in 2016 and was completed in 2018. The house spans 180sqm on the ground floor, with an additional 60sqm of basement area. The design has been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2021, highlighting its outstanding expertise, innovation, and strong technical characteristics.
George Sinas, the leader architect of Sinas Architects, led the design team, which included Maria Mamoura and interior decorator Olga Ktena. The project posed unique challenges in taming the wavy morphology while ensuring the layout of the house remained functional. The result is a residence that seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings, offering a new perspective on Cycladic architecture and island living.
