Shengzhe Shen's Zenstay Boutique Hotel on Dongji Island, China, is a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, offering a unique experience for visitors seeking a rustic island getaway.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Shengzhe Shen's Zenstay Boutique Hotel is a stunning example of adaptive renovation, blending traditional island culture with modern design. Situated on Dongji Island, the hotel offers a unique experience for visitors, combining the rustic charm of a stone house with the comforts of a modern hotel.
The reconstruction project focused on preserving the original structure while introducing novel white blocks to establish continuity between detached public spaces. The result is a seamless transition between old and new, creating a harmonious and stable environment for guests.
The hotel features 9 sea view guest rooms, a restaurant, a sober bar, a conference room, and a full viewing multifunctional platform, providing a range of amenities for visitors to enjoy.
The project, which began in April 2017 and was completed in February 2019, presented numerous challenges, including the use of low-tech construction methods and the need to overcome logistical obstacles on the remote island. Despite these challenges, the team successfully combined modern materials with local craftsmanship, preserving the traditional details of the original structure.
Shen's design philosophy aimed to cater to the functional and scenic requirements of the island, embracing both traditional and novel aspects with a sincere and simple attitude. The result is a hotel that offers a unique and immersive experience for guests, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region.
Shen Shengzhe, the Founder and Chief Architect of Zen-in Architects, is a master of architecture from the Central Academy of Fine Arts.
