Renowned designer Naoya TOCHIO transforms a ryokan's banquet hall into a unique Japanese modern hotel, "Yuamu," blending tradition with contemporary design, completed in January 2023 and awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Renowned designer Naoya TOCHIO has reimagined the traditional ryokan experience with the transformation of a banquet hall into "Yuamu," a Japanese modern hotel that seamlessly blends tradition with contemporary design. In response to the impact of COVID-19 on banquet halls, the owner envisioned repurposing the space into guest rooms, resulting in a unique, unprecedented design.
The guest rooms feature high ceilings and varying floor heights, creating an open and spacious atmosphere. The innovative layout places the living room and bathroom near the window, offering guests a picturesque view of the flowing river. The design theme of the restaurant, "ORIORI," is inspired by the hotel's name, incorporating elements of weaving and folding to achieve a comfortable and visually striking ambiance.
With a focus on integrating the verbal and visual elements, the hotel and restaurant were named after the ryokan's location, establishing a distinct and authentic branding that resonates with the region's identity.
The project, which commenced in August 2021, presented various creative and technical challenges, including the custom production of furniture to enhance the originality of the design. The meticulous attention to detail, from the architecture to the furniture dimensions, underscores the project's commitment to simplicity and excellence.
Yuamu spans a gross floor area of 5106.27ã¡, with 34 rooms and a restaurant seating capacity of 120. The innovative renovation, completed in January 2023, marks a significant milestone in redefining Japanese modern hospitality, offering guests a one-of-a-kind experience that seamlessly integrates tradition and contemporary design.
