Haobo Wei & Jingsong Xie Introduce the Cui Suba Yi Cultural Visitor Centre
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Haobo Wei & Jingsong Xie have unveiled the Cui Suba Yi Cultural Visitor Centre, a wordless monument inspired by the ancient Yi people's traditions and rituals. Located in the mountainous plateau of Cuisuba Grassland, Guizhou, China, the center aims to regenerate and develop the constructed culture of the Yi people while contributing to local tourism. The completion of the center is scheduled for May 2021, with construction having commenced in October 2018.
The design of the center integrates the ritual structure of the Yi community with a contemporary functional system, creating a bond with the local community's collective memory and way of life. The spatial model is based on the 'ritual' structure of the Yi community society and features a concrete frame, local sandstone, concrete, and stained glass. The building spans three floors, with a site area of 1,565 sqm and a building area of 2,569 sqm.
Despite the ecologically sensitive nature of the area, the designers have successfully balanced tourism intervention with the preservation of the sacred status of the community's spiritual center. The center has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture, Building, and Structure Design in 2022, showcasing its outstanding and creatively ingenious design that contributes to quality of life improvements.
