Stair House: A Modern Interpretation of Traditional Southern Architecture

William Price's Stair House challenges conventional residential design by reinterpreting traditional Southern architecture to create a culturally and environmentally sustainable living space. Drawing inspiration from the traditional Dog Trot Houses and Spanish Colonial houses in the southern United States, the Stair House incorporates breezeways for air circulation and porches for shade and rain protection. The project aims to provoke thought on our evolving relationship with nature and urban living.

The Stair House is a 3-story, 3000 sq ft residence situated in the Lower Heights neighborhood of Downtown Houston, Texas. It features wood framing, steel moment frames, and 30% recycled corrugated galvalume walls with insulated operable windows. The roof is waterproofed with TPO and has rigid and batt insulation. The house also boasts outdoor patios with deep planter guard rails and three types of stairs for vertical circulation: circular, kick back, and tapered straight-run.

Designed to maximize natural light and promote a connection to nature, the Stair House overcame the challenge of creating a comfortable living space within the constraints of a narrow urban infill lot. The incorporation of open floor plans, large elevations of glass, and covered outdoor patios with deep planters and operable windows enhances cross-ventilation and a connection to nature, reflecting the evolving relationship with nature and urban living.
