Award-winning architect Christos Pavlou unveils a unique blend of traditional and contemporary design, seamlessly integrating indoor and outdoor spaces
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Architect Christos Pavlou introduces "Courtyards," a two-story house that harmoniously blends traditional Cypriot home design with contemporary elements, creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. The project, completed in July 2020 in Nicosia, Cyprus, is a testament to the studio's commitment to integrating nature, comfort, and modern design.
The design concept is rooted in the dialectical relationship between indoor and outdoor space, transforming the courtyard into a tool of architectural composition. The boundaries between inside and outside blur, bringing nature indoors and making the courtyards a way of life. The experience of the residences revolves around the atriums and gardens, enabling users to enjoy the magic of the evolution of life, the changes of light, vegetation, and the seasonal colors of nature.
The house features three large green courtyards, offering protected extensions for outdoor activities and delightful gathering spots all year-round. The upper floor extends the concept of courtyards, with all bedrooms opening onto protected, uncovered continuous long balconies, creating interior spaces directly connected to their external environment.
Employing a reversed concrete beam structural system and slim steel circular columns, the design achieves an airy, minimalistic aesthetic. Floor-to-ceiling sliding aluminum glazing systems enhance the interior space and strengthen the relationship between inside and outside. The landscape and green courtyards become integral parts of the architecture, further blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces.
The project, which began in 2018, has garnered attention from architectural publications such as Archdaily, Designboom, and archilovers, showcasing its innovative approach to traditional Cypriot home design. Christos Pavlou's "Courtyards" stands as a testament to the studio's ability to create comfortable and safe living conditions in inhospitable landscapes, straddling the line between city and nature, isolation and sociability.
Christos Pavlou Architecture studio, based in Nicosia, Cyprus, is known for its commitment to environmental sensitivity, formal simplicity, and the integration of inside-outside spaces. The studio's architecture is driven by the need to solve complex programs in a simple and clear manner, with a focus on energy efficiency, automation technology, sustainability, and ecological designs.
