Takanao Todo Unveils Koto Tea Space, Embracing Japanese Tea Culture in Urban Oasis

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Koto Tea Space: A Fusion of Japanese Tradition and Urban Serenity

Takanao Todo, an architectural designer, introduces Koto Tea Space, a serene Japanese teahouse nestled in downtown Bangkok. Embracing the concept of "Shichu no Sankyo," the space offers a rural retreat within the urban pulse, featuring wave-patterned ceramic tiles at the entrance to shield from the city's chaos. The Tea Salon, with 6 seats and 2 tatami areas, showcases a peaceful horizontal design, paying homage to Shugaku-in's signature shelf. The space harmoniously combines the existing structure, earthy walls, and natural lacquer-finished furniture, creating an inviting coziness.

Todo's innovative approach to the design incorporates elements of Japanese tea culture, digital fabrication, and Thai ceramic cladding, resulting in a unique and authentic experience for tea enthusiasts. The space also hosts frequent workshops to provide a comprehensive understanding of Japanese Tea Culture, further enriching the visitor experience.

The project, which commenced in August 2021 and completed in July 2023, is a testament to Todo's commitment to seamless integration and conceptual design, aiming to share the latent narrative of Japanese tea culture with a wider audience. Koto Tea Space was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2024, recognizing its outstanding and creatively ingenious design that authentically embodies experience and resourcefulness.
