Cheung Chiu Hung's innovative design for the Pearl River Howard Plaza hotel in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, reimagines the traditional Cantonese restaurant space, combining elegance, comfort, and natural light to create a unique dining experience.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Cheung Chiu Hung's design for the Pearl River Howard Plaza hotel in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, has redefined the traditional ambiance of Cantonese restaurants. The 495 square meter space combines elegance, comfort, and natural light to create a unique dining experience. The design team, led by Cheung Chiu Hung and Huang Chung Jen, aimed to break away from the stereotypical and existing spatial ambience of traditional Cantonese cuisines. The design eliminates the commonly seen presentations of Chinese ancient dimness or excessively extravagant style, aiming to maintain the aesthetic sentiment of Chinese style with elegance and comfort.
The design features large round tables with segmented spatial areas and seats arranged in different styles to cater to various customer groups. Natural light is a key element, with a specially designed large glass piece allowing copious natural light to shine indoors during the day, creating a vibrant and inviting atmosphere. In the evening, the lighting is ingeniously applied to create a romantic ambiance, providing a relaxing environment for guests.
The open-style booths are adorned with wallpapers featuring Chinese images, enhancing the space with aesthetic sentiment, while the carpet is presented using Chinese ink painting techniques, resembling exquisite paintings. The design team also incorporated elements such as marbles and wood carving lines to enhance spatial layers and increase the overall quality of the space.
The project was completed in April 2019 and has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This prestigious award acknowledges the outstanding and creatively ingenious designs that authenticate experience and resourcefulness, contributing to quality of life improvements.
