Residential House Redesign Reflects Unique Fusion of South African and Colonial Architecture

Priscilla Khiu's African Colonial Chic redesign seamlessly blends South African and colonial architectural elements, creating a modern fusion that reflects the owners' love of wildlife photography and the original architectural features of an old colonial house. The project, located in Siglap, Singapore, was completed in 5 months, starting construction in October 2018. The design process began 6 months prior to construction, resulting in a stunning 3860sqft home that beautifully marries the two cultures.

The design's unique strength lies in its ability to reflect the personalities and aesthetics of its inhabitants while incorporating the history and culture of the physical space. By carefully weaving modern hints of South African culture and wildlife into an architecturally colonial abode, Priscilla Khiu has created an alchemy of style and character that reflects modern sensibility and adheres to the owners' taste, preference, and aspirations.

The project's technical specifications include a 3200sqft built-up area, situated atop a hill in Siglap, Singapore. The house's irregular floor plate posed a significant challenge, which was overcome through meticulous design adjustments and corrections to visually align and straighten the space. The use of full-height French doors, geometric tiles, and carefully selected materials such as rattan and whitewashed wood stain carpentry further enhance the unique character of the space.

This exceptional design was recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in 2020, affirming its outstanding creativity and ingenious fusion of architectural styles. The project's success is a testament to Priscilla Khiu's ability to create spaces that authentically reflect the users' styles and sensibilities while showing sensitivity to the locale and history of the space.
