Designing a Digital Wonderland: Wuhan Pixel Box Cinema

Ajax Law's Wuhan Pixel Box Cinema is a groundbreaking project that reimagines the traditional movie theater experience. Inspired by the relationship between movement and pixels, the cinema offers a unique and immersive environment for movie enthusiasts. From the entrance to the lavatory, every aspect of the design reflects the theme of "Pixel," creating a cohesive and captivating atmosphere for visitors.

The cinema's entrance, concession counter, leisure area, and feature display wall are all meticulously crafted with pixel-inspired elements, including LCD screens, square strips, and cube-shaped structures. The bookshop area showcases a class of magnificence, utilizing every surface of the boxes to display books. The box office grand hall features a stunning curved envelop formed by over 6000 pieces of stainless steel panels, creating a mesmerizing play of light and space. The Children’s Auditorium, with its vibrant square-patterned carpet and playful seating, offers a harmonious and lively atmosphere.

One of the most remarkable features of the cinema is the lavatory, where every toilet cubicle is deliberately designed with distinctive heights, creating a mysterious and immersive space for visitors. The cohesive integration of pixel elements throughout the cinema ensures that every aspect of the design contributes to a digital wonderland for moviegoers.

The project, completed in November 2011 in Wuhan, China, spans 8835 square meters and showcases a meticulous attention to detail in its realization. The design team, led by Mr. Ajax Law Ling Kit and Ms. Virginia Lung, overcame creative, technical, and research challenges to bring this innovative concept to life. The use of materials such as stainless steel, glass, marble, LED, and timber, along with the careful consideration of space and structure, reflects the depth of research and experimentation that went into the project.

Ajax Law's Wuhan Pixel Box Cinema has been recognized with the prestigious Platinum A' Design Award in 2012, affirming its exceptional and highly innovative design that contributes to societal wellbeing. This award-winning project sets a new standard for interior space, retail, and exhibition design, showcasing unmatched professionalism and genius in redefining the aesthetics of the movie-going experience.
