Sliding Door Renovation Project

Masaki Suzuki's innovative sliding door design is a response to the changing lifestyle needs brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The project, located in Chiba prefecture, Japan, was completed between February and July 2020, offering a new way of living in limited spaces.

The renovation project involved the insertion of 10 continuous sliding doors in place of a traditional wall, creating a high degree of freedom within the space. The design allows for natural lighting to permeate the corridor, offering a versatile living environment suitable for both relaxation and work-at-home scenarios.

To achieve a beautiful and warm space, the continuous sliding doors, workspace desk, and TV board were crafted from plywood, complemented by bright flooring. The corridor floor was finished with tiles, creating an open and spacious atmosphere reminiscent of a traditional Japanese townhouse.

Masaki Suzuki's sliding door design allows for seamless control over the degree of connection between spaces. The innovative use of sliding doors enables the creation of private areas within a larger room, catering to the diverse needs of modern living.

Through meticulous research and creative problem-solving, Masaki Suzuki successfully incorporated natural lighting into the dwelling unit's inner corridor, addressing the challenge of dark and cold impressions commonly found in Japanese apartments.
