FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The National Gallery Athens has unveiled a revolutionary permanent exhibition showcasing Greek art from the 19th to 20th century, designed by the esteemed team at Parmenidis-Longuepee-Mari. The exhibition aims to provide visitors with a sense of free choice in their movement through the space, achieved through material and geometric spatial indexes that guide the gaze and create an open-air feeling with indirect lighting. The design emphasizes minimalism and utilizes subdued materials to accentuate the artworks, offering a truly immersive experience for art enthusiasts.
The exhibition features permanent and alternating exhibition areas, each meticulously designed to enhance the visitor's interaction with the art. Large exhibition panels and suspended ceilings serve as lighting mechanisms, while wooden panels in the entrance area and circulation junctions aid in orientation and space division. Notably, the design establishes a two-way relationship between the artworks and the city, allowing glimpses of the urban landscape to complement the viewing experience.
Spanning over 8,500 square meters across six floors, the exhibition is a testament to the team's dedication to creating a captivating and accessible space for art enthusiasts. The project, which commenced in 2017 and concluded in 2021, required meticulous coordination with various stakeholders, including constructors, engineers, and cultural authorities, making it a remarkable achievement in the field of museography and interior design.
