Jeffrey Shum's Innovative Design Blends Faith and Community in Kowloon, Hong Kong
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Jeffrey Shum's "The Praise Assembly" in Kowloon, Hong Kong, is a groundbreaking church and community hub that defies convention. The venue, spanning 1,400 sqm, is not just a place of worship but a space for the neighborhood to gather, interact, and learn. The innovative layout comprises three distinct zones: Worship, Community, and Youth, featuring study areas, pantries, therapy rooms, and activity spaces.
The centerpiece of the design is a feature wall shelf sculpturally resembling a tree canopy, crafted from birch plywood using parametric modelling tools and CNC cutting. This unique element serves as functional seating and bar tables, embodying the project's ethos of fostering connection and engagement.
Design commenced in May 2018, and construction was completed in Jan 2019, culminating in a space that seamlessly integrates biblical motifs with modern functionality. The project received the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in 2020, recognizing its innovative approach to blending faith, community, and design.
