Nagisa Bakery's Award-Winning Interior Melds Surf Culture, Music, and Community Spirit in Sakai City, Osaka

Nagisa Bakery, designed by Katsunori Nagai of Re+ Design Lab, is set to open its doors on November 23, 2024, at Sunpia Komyoike in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture. The bakery, recently awarded the Bronze A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award, stands out for its creative approach to interior design, drawing inspiration from surf culture and the iconic song "Nagisa Hotel" by Southern All Stars. The project was born from the owner's desire to infuse energy into the local community, offering a space where customers can feel uplifted by both the food and the environment.

The interior concept expresses the themes of "shore" and "sea" through the use of strong linear designs and a vibrant palette of eight shades of blue, which are featured in ceiling louvers that evoke the rhythm and melody of the owner's favorite song. The bakery's signature baguettes are displayed like surfboards against corrugated slate, reminiscent of beach hut roofs, creating a playful and inviting focal point. The design cleverly separates the display area with distinct materials, drawing attention to the products and sparking customer curiosity.

In realizing the project, Nagai overcame budgetary constraints by repurposing existing fixtures from the previous butcher shop tenant and utilizing cost-effective materials, such as mass-produced corrugated slate and painted ceiling undercoats. This sustainable approach not only minimized waste and construction costs but also contributed to the bakery's unique charm. Through thoughtful spatial composition and creative reuse, Nagisa Bakery delivers a fresh, energetic atmosphere that reflects both the owner's passion and the spirit of the local community, setting a new standard for bakery design in Japan.
