Silent Currents Transforms Former Nuclear Test Site into Thriving Marine Sanctuary and Living Memorial

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA -- /ARCHITECTURE/newswire -- Jul 19, 2024

Yanci Chen's Silent Currents, awarded the Iron A' Design Award 2025, reimagines a Pacific Ocean nuclear test site as a vibrant marine sanctuary and ecological memorial, blending innovative artificial reefs, tidal energy, and public engagement to foster biodiversity and honor environmental resilience.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Silent Currents: Memorializing and Restoring Marine Ecosystems at a Historic Pacific Site

Silent Currents, designed by Yanci Chen and Jing Chen, is a groundbreaking project that transforms a former nuclear test site in the Pacific Ocean into a living marine sanctuary and memorial. Launching in February 2025, the initiative addresses the devastating legacy of nuclear testing by fostering ecological restoration and public remembrance. Through the integration of artificial reef structures, tidal energy systems, and immersive visitor pathways, Silent Currents offers a powerful vision of environmental healing and sustainable coexistence.

The project's core innovation lies in its use of marine-grade, calcium carbonate-infused concrete and 3D-printed reef forms, which accelerate coral regeneration and provide habitats for diverse marine species. Submerged pathways and floating observation platforms, constructed from recycled polymers and corrosion-resistant alloys, invite visitors to witness the gradual revival of the underwater ecosystem. By harnessing tidal energy, Silent Currents not only powers its own infrastructure but also symbolizes a shift toward renewable energy and ecological stewardship.

Silent Currents is the result of extensive interdisciplinary research, combining marine biology, environmental engineering, and architectural design. The project overcame significant challenges, including site contamination and limited data on long-term recovery, through innovative material solutions and collaboration with oceanographers and ecologists. As a recipient of the Iron A' Design Award in Sustainable Products, Projects and Green Design, Silent Currents stands as a testament to the transformative potential of design in addressing environmental trauma and inspiring collective action for a more resilient future.
