Aziz House: Award-Winning Fusion of Tradition, Sustainability, and Modern Comfort in Buraydah

Aziz House, designed by Sarah Harhash and her team, has been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Design Award 2025 in the Architecture, Building, and Structure category. Located in Buraydah, Saudi Arabia, the project stands out for its innovative approach to residential design, seamlessly integrating Cycladic massing, Najdi geometric patterns, and Moroccan clay aesthetics. The house addresses the challenges of desert living by employing passive cooling, natural ventilation, and strategic shading, creating a comfortable and environmentally conscious sanctuary for its residents.

The design draws inspiration from the region's cultural heritage and the natural environment. The facades are finished with Tadelakt, a traditional Moroccan lime plaster, hand-applied to achieve a seamless, waterproof, and tactile surface that resonates with the desert landscape. The architecture maximizes natural light and airflow, while a thoughtful palette of breeze blocks, wood, and palm leaves fosters a refined yet warm ambiance. Expansive glass facades and a balanced interplay of light and shadow blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, enhancing the sense of openness and tranquility.

Research and site visits informed every aspect of the project, from the selection of locally sourced, eco-friendly materials to the incorporation of a desert-themed landscape with cacti and a duck pond for natural cooling. The design process overcame the challenge of merging three distinct architectural styles while maintaining cultural respect and aesthetic harmony. Aziz House ultimately offers a private yet open retreat, tailored for relaxation and reconnection, and sets a new benchmark for sustainable, culturally rooted residential architecture in Saudi Arabia.
