The University Square: A Vibrant, Award-Winning Green Space Reimagining Campus Life at PolyU

The University Square, designed by the Campus Development Office at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, revitalizes a low-traffic area into a dynamic, pedestrian-friendly lawn at the heart of the main campus. Completed in October 2023, the 2,200-square-meter open space now serves as a symbolic and iconic center, fostering community engagement and strengthening connections between campus blocks. The project's bold design balances the site's natural heritage with innovative social spaces, introducing a new mode of interaction where students and staff can "see and be seen."

Central to the design are two veteran trees, thoughtfully preserved and highlighted with custom-crafted timber seating decks. These irregularly shaped, hand-built decks provide flexible gathering spots and artistic flair, encouraging relaxation and community interaction under the shade of mature trees. The open lawn accommodates a range of activities, from daily relaxation to large-scale events such as graduation ceremonies, academic fairs, and cultural celebrations, making it a welcoming showcase for campus life and a serene retreat for all.

The project overcame significant challenges, including a compressed summer construction schedule and record rainfall in Hong Kong, by employing a phased approach and flexible work hours to minimize disruption to campus operations. The design was informed by research into the social behaviors of the younger generation, resulting in an inclusive, accessible space that aligns with modern trends for visibility and connection. The University Square's success is recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2025, honoring its practical innovation, technical excellence, and positive impact on the PolyU community.
