Nature-Inspired Interior Renovation Brings Light, Accessibility, and Sustainability to a Family Home in Changhua

"Within The Sunlit Haven" by Erin Guo reimagines the first floor of a decades-old residence in Changhua, Taiwan, turning a once dim and compartmentalized space into a vibrant, open-concept haven. Inspired by the homeowners' love of hiking and nature, the design incorporates rounded ceiling corners reminiscent of mountain paths and metal wall accents that evoke sunlight streaming through peaks. The renovation seamlessly connects the foyer, living, and dining areas, creating a communal environment ideal for gatherings and family interaction.

Central to the project is a commitment to accessibility and well-being. The space was designed for a mother in her 60s and her son, with careful attention to lighting for eye health, adjustable brightness, and color temperature. Unique features include metal grab bars at the foyer for added support and safety, as well as a dining room light fixture that doubles as a reading lamp. Only certified non-toxic, eco-friendly materials-such as 0 VOC paints, sustainable lumber, and calcium silicate boards-were used, ensuring a healthy environment for the family.

The renovation addressed significant challenges, including poor lighting, water leakage, and structural damage typical of older buildings. By stripping the interior to its skeleton and replacing outdated windows with high-transparency glass, Erin Guo was able to resolve these issues and completely redesign the layout for improved circulation and comfort. Modern amenities like a concealed AC unit and energy-efficient ventilation system further enhance the home's livability, while thoughtful details such as a circular maintenance hatch blend utility with aesthetics. The project's success in combining functionality, sustainability, and beauty earned it the Iron A' Design Award, recognizing its contribution to contemporary interior design standards.
