Helsinki-based designer Tomi Rantasaari's Node project has been honored with the Bronze A' Engineering, Construction and Infrastructure Design Award 2025, recognizing its groundbreaking approach to transforming electrical substations into safe, aesthetically refined urban landmarks that blend seamlessly into city and park environments.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Node project, conceived by Tomi Rantasaari, reimagines the traditional transformer substation as a visually captivating and secure element of urban infrastructure. Drawing inspiration from organic patterns in nature-such as fireflies, constellations, and rippling water-Node features a precision-perforated metal façade that transforms a utilitarian structure into a harmonious architectural landmark. As dusk falls, integrated LED lighting softly illuminates the substation, enhancing its presence and contributing to the city's nighttime landscape.
Constructed using advanced fabrication techniques and durable materials like corten steel and high-performance aluminum, Node is engineered for both structural integrity and aesthetic longevity. The fully enclosed design ensures maximum electrical safety and security, with no visible openings and a concealed access door for maintenance. The substation's compact 4m x 3m footprint, passive cooling system, and IP54/IP55 protection standards make it suitable for deployment in diverse urban and park settings, while anti-graffiti and corrosion-resistant coatings ensure resilience against environmental challenges.
Node's development began in 2019, with the official design phase launching in autumn 2024. The project's research-driven approach involved collaboration among urban planners, architects, and engineers to optimize technical performance and visual integration. The result is a substation that not only meets stringent safety and operational requirements but also elevates public space aesthetics, setting a new benchmark for infrastructure design. The Bronze A' Design Award recognizes Node's contribution to quality of life improvements and its role in shaping the future of urban environments.
