Kazuma Kobayashi's "Stack Up" house, completed in 2023 in Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, has been honored with the 2025 Iron A' Design Award for its innovative approach to urban privacy, blending resort-like comfort with open, light-filled spaces in a densely built city center.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Kazuma Kobayashi's "Stack Up" house redefines urban living by offering a tranquil, resort-inspired retreat in the heart of Kurashiki City. Designed to provide both privacy and openness, the home features a distinctive composition of overlapping box-like volumes, creating a sense of depth and architectural intrigue. The central courtyard acts as a private oasis, allowing natural light and breezes to flow freely while shielding residents from the gaze of neighboring buildings.
A key challenge addressed by Kobayashi was achieving an open, airy atmosphere in a tightly packed city environment. Strategic window placement maximizes daylight and views while maintaining privacy, and the use of large glass panels further enhances the sense of spaciousness inside. High ceilings reduce any feeling of confinement, and the interior palette was carefully selected to highlight the client's cherished collection of miscellaneous goods, making the home both personal and functional.
The outdoor garden, designed as a safe and spacious dog run, reflects Kobayashi's commitment to pet-friendly living. Thoughtful choices in fence and stair heights ensure a secure environment for pets, while the integration of natural materials and a prominent tree in the garden harmonize the exterior with the home's interior. This holistic approach not only fulfills the client's requests but also creates a living space that balances comfort, privacy, and openness-qualities that contributed to its recognition with the Iron A' Design Award in 2025.
