Panlong Tiandi Mtpt: A Retail Store Where Architecture and Nature Achieve Symbiotic Harmony

ImSD Imperfetto Space Design, led by Minghong Ou, has redefined the retail experience with the Panlong Tiandi Mtpt project, located in the historic Panlong Tiandi area of Shanghai. Drawing inspiration from outdoor hiking adventures, the design seamlessly integrates elements such as forests, streams, ponds, stones, and mountain huts, blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. The central theme, "Touching Nature," is brought to life through the use of natural materials and innovative sound installations, creating a space where visitors can connect with the flexible beauty of the natural world.

One of the store's most distinctive features is a morning glory-shaped sound installation that immerses guests in a mysterious world of sound and light. By collecting and replaying outdoor sounds-such as water, birds, and wind-the installation fosters a deeper interaction between people and nature. Large floor-to-ceiling windows further dissolve the divide between the built environment and the surrounding water town scenery, while raw wood and micro-cement materials evoke a sense of organic harmony throughout the interior.

The project, which began in June 2024 and concluded in November 2024, overcame significant technical challenges, including the creation of a visually striking sloping wooden plank ceiling supported by an internal aluminum alloy frame. Extensive research into consumer behavior and spatial experience underpinned the design, utilizing tropes and defamiliarization to evoke familiar yet novel sensations. The result is a retail environment that not only showcases Mtpt products but also invites visitors to rediscover the wonders of nature within an urban context, earning recognition for its ingenuity and contribution to quality of life.
