FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Shiroyama Restaurant: A Fusion of Japanese and Kazakh Culture on the Caspian Coast

Shiroyama, conceived by designer Ivan Krupin, stands as a testament to the harmonious blending of Japanese and Kazakh cultures, set against the stunning backdrop of the Caspian Sea in Aktau, Kazakhstan. Completed in March 2024, the 286-square-meter restaurant captures the essence of its location through panoramic glazing, natural materials sourced from the surrounding landscape, and a central design motif inspired by the sacred Baiterek tree-a symbol of unity in Kazakh culture. The project's name, meaning "castle mountain" in Japanese, further underscores its cross-cultural narrative.

The interior design of Shiroyama is characterized by its thoughtful integration of local and Japanese influences. Stones collected from the nearby shore, tabletops crafted from local elm, and CBPB slabs imitating concrete panels all contribute to a space that feels both authentic and innovative. The restaurant's lighting design responds to the changing natural light throughout the day, creating a dynamic atmosphere that shifts from sunlit mornings to cozy, illuminated evenings. Each element, from the stylized Bozzhira mountain range to sofas resembling boulders, is carefully chosen to evoke contemplation and harmony.

Overcoming challenges such as budget constraints and the remote location of Aktau, Krupin prioritized the use of local resources and sustainable solutions without compromising on artistic vision. The result is an environment that resonates with visitors, offering a unique dining experience where Japanese cuisine and Kazakh heritage coexist seamlessly. Shiroyama's recognition with the Silver A' Design Award 2025 highlights its exceptional creativity, technical execution, and the emotional impact it delivers to all who enter.
